Operating Your Balance

Understanding your Balance Catamaran from Top to Bottom

We have compiled a list of 130 topics to help you comprehensively understand the operations, troubleshooting and maintenance of your Balance Catamaran.

It will take some time to create videos for all these topics, but we are systematically working through it. The highest priority videos are chosen based on requests from the yards and owners, focusing on common malpractices and areas of confusion. To help us prioritize the production order, you are welcome to connect with our Head of Production, Dean Paarman, either directly at dean@balancecatamarans.com or by replying in the video request forum.

Although we have only published a handful of videos as of June 2024, you can see the categories listed below. In April and May 2024, we filmed a large number of new videos and are working hard to make this a comprehensive library by the end of 2024.

1. HANDOVER OVERVIEW

When your boat is handed over to you in either Cape Town or St. Francis Bay, you will participate in a multi-day introduction event with one of our commissioning skippers.

1.1 SYSTEMS OVERVIEW

On the first day of handover, you will go over all the systems on board your Balance Catamaran. This video will give you an idea of how much there is to cover. Many new owners, especially first-time boat owners, remark how overwhelming this process can be. We hope these videos reduce the overwhelm by helping you get familiar with the Balance systems at your own pace.

⚠️ NOTE: Most of the handover series was filmed on a Balance 442. There may be differences in other models.

Fundamentally, all the boat systems operate on the same principles, though there may be variations in locations and suppliers (for example, we have recently changed our pump brand). We will do our best to create supplementary videos to highlight important differences. If a video does not help you solve your problem, let us know immediately.

1.2 ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS OVERVIEW

On day 2, it’s all about the the electrical system. Together with the electrician you will go over the batteries, alternators, solar, shore power, etc.

1.3 OEM (ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS)

Over the remaining day of handover you will be introduced to the OEMs, such as Yanmar engines, Ullman sails, and Spectra watermakers. Representatives from the respective suppliers will come to the boat to demonstrate the operations and troubleshooting procedures.

In this page we have included the introduction processes. You can find further information and original content from the OEMs themselves on the MAINTENANCE PAGE.

1.4 SAILING

Finally, the best part: Learn how to sail your boat. You’ll go out onto Table Bay to test all your sails and rigging with Ullman, Sparcraft, and your commissioning skipper.

We have separated all the sailing operations and troubleshooting videos into a separate page, which can be found HERE.

Let's get into the details!
